Laser Surgery For Oral Cancer

Oral cancer or mouth cancer is a subtype of head and neck cancer, is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. It may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the oral tissues, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighboring anatomic structure, such as the nasal cavity.

It is important to note that around 75 percent of oral cancers are linked to modifiable behaviors such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. Other factors include poor oral hygiene, irritation caused by ill-fitting dentures and other rough surfaces on the teeth, poor nutrition, and some chronic infections caused by bacteria or viruses. If oral cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, treatment is generally very effective. Oral cancer in India represents 40% of all cancers compared to UK where it accounts for only 4%.

Problems associated with Surgery Treatments of Oral Cancer

  • Extremely mutilating for patient
  • Cosmetically not acceptable
  • Severe functional impairment of swallowing, speech and eating
  • Even after radical surgery very high incidence of recurrence
  • Recurrences not manageable at all after surgery
  • Low life expectancy after surgery with mutilation

This happens because most of cases in oral cancer in India are in Stage 3 and 4 . In this stage the surgery is only offered as palliation (control of local symptoms) and not as a cure. This fact is many times not revealed unless asked for by patient. Orchid Cancer Centre has a team of expert doctors and specialist for Oral cancer treatment in the Mumbai.
